Trend: Cowboy Boots

09 Apr, 2019

The Wild, Wild West (but make it fashion).

If the region just shy of our ankles is anything to go by, it would seem that the wild, wild west has arrived here in 2019. That’s right. The cowboy boots trend has officially been given the greenlight by the fashion powers that be.

Traditionally favoured by 1870s cowboys and Toy Story’s annoying AF protagonist Woody (just us?), cowboy boots were the true MVP of all the major fashion weeks this year. Both on the runway and off, all your fave designers and street style stars were leaning into that big yeehaw energy.

Cowboy boots (see also: western boots and cowgirl boots) are enjoying a major redux this year. And, chances are that they’ll remain on-trend for many high noons to come. Style kweens have been repping the statement shoes on and off since the 90s.

By our calculations, that puts cowboy boots on the same level as well-structured black blazers, white t-shirts and your trusty pair of vintage-inspired jeans when it comes to sound fashion investments. They’re a hard yes for fans of a wardrobe that will withstand the test of time.

The best bit? There’s plenty of different style options to choose from if you want to dip your toe in the trend (literally). When you hear the words ‘cowboy boots’, your mind might be forgiven for picturing traditional western boots only, but there’s countless new incarnations that give the beloved boot a modern update.

Elevate an all-black ensemble with a pair of snakeskin western-inspired ankle boots, add edge to a feminine mid-length dress with a pair of black leather cowboy boots, or use them to give your favourite suit streetwear appeal. Try the cowboy boots trend in white, paired with a denim jacket for a playful nod due West, or keep things casual by adding brown cowboy boots to your classic ‘jeans and a tee’ combo. If ankle-grazing boots don’t appeal to you, a rancher-inspired knee-high boot should do the trick.

Cowboy boots are the perfect transeasonal option, too. They look just as at home combined with your favourite summer dress or denim shorts as they do with your winter woolies and trusty leather jacket. Dress them up or down depending on the time of day or what the dress code calls for.

“But, how do I partake in the Western-inspired trend without looking like Halloween came early?”, we hear you ask. And we’re glad you did! These key styling hacks will ensure you look cowboy boot chic and not fancy-dress party tra-gic when styling your new favey boots .

1) Avoid other OTT western-inspired pieces

So, you’ve decided to go full giddy-up with your shoe choice? Great! Now it’s time to add in some polished wardrobe pieces to your look to make sure you toe the line between western-inspired and fab. The addition of a silk slip, a well-structured blazer or an on-trend trench coat will make your cowboy boots look particularly stylish. Avoid any pieces that appear too literal or gimmicky (think: ornate belt buckles, heavy fringing and other western clichés) when styling your boots.

2) Don’t be afraid to mix and match trends

Why stop at one trend? Hit a trifecta of trends by pairing your boots with bike shorts and a blazer, or a puff-sleeve blouse and high-waisted jeans. Urban cowgirl eat your heart out.

3) Embrace ultra-feminine wardrobe pieces

We love the unexpected dichotomy of pretty pieces, like white frilly dresses, and those that are more classic, like a trench, with western boots.

4) If in doubt, stick to classics

Just remember: jeans and a t-shirt will always look effortlessly chic when paired with cowboy boots. These casual, understated wardrobe staples will also ensure that your boots remain the star of the show.
